Birth Control

What is birth control?

With today’s modern technology, women are faced with more choices of birth control than ever before. You can choose between Natural Family Planning, Contraceptives and Abortifacient birth control.

What is the difference between Natural Family Planning, Contraceptives and Abortifacient birth control?

Natural Family Planning is similar to the “Rhythm Method” in that sexual activity is centered around the wife’s menstrual cycle. Her menstrual cycle begins on the first day of her period and ends on the last day before her next period begins. Around 14 days into the menstrual cycle, she releases and egg (ovulation). Signs of ovulation are increased body temperature, change and increase in vaginal fluids and increased feelings of arousal. The egg is available for fertilization for 1-3 days. Sperm can live in the vagina for 1-3 days. This causes about a 6 day window in which the wife can get pregnant. In Natural Family Planning, depending on whether or not the couple wishes to have a baby, sexual intercourse is encouraged or avoided during these days.  This is a recommended use of birth control for married couples who believe that abortion is the taking of a human life.

Contraceptives include barrier methods: condoms, the diaphragm, the cervical cap, and anti-sperm methods such as the sponge, jellies, foams and creams. This is a recommended use of birth control for married couples who believe that abortion is the taking of a human life.

Abortifacients is birth control that may cause an abortion. There are two basic types of pills: combination pills and mini-pills, which both work in the same manner. Both pills act to prevent the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation) and cause the cervical mucus to thicken, making it difficult for the sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. In this case, a pregnancy is prevented and no abortion occurs. However, women can and do experience breakthrough ovulation, meaning that an egg is released from the ovary and is available to be fertilized by a sperm, which can break through the thickened mucus. If this happens, then the woman gets pregnant. Here’s where the pills may become an abortifacient (abortion causing): Both types of pills change the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for the fertilized egg (a zygote: 5-7 day old human life) to attach itself to the lining of the uterus. If the baby does not successfully implant to the lining, where it would receive the nourishment it needs to grow, then the growing human will be expelled from the mother’s body during menstruation. This process is known as a chemical abortion. Since the human did not implant to the uterine wall, many do not consider it to be an abortion. If you believe that life begins at conception, which we here at Pure Victory Ministries do, then taking birth control pills may end in the abortion of your baby. If the zygote does implant to the uterine wall, it has diminished chance of survival due to the Abortifacients ability to deprive it of the nourishment it needs to thrive.

What are some side effects from taking the pill?

Some possible side effects may include: weight gain, acne, breast and cervical cancer, lowered immunity to STDs, inability to have children later in life (infertility), tubal or ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the human attaches itself outside the uterus. Death of the human is always the result. If the ectopic pregnancy goes undetected, severe effects including death to the mother may occur if it ruptures. A tubal pregnancy can occur because the pill slows down the movement within the fallopian tube, causing the human to attach to the lining of the tube instead of the lining of the uterus. This is always fatal to the baby human and can be harmful or fatal to the mother if untreated.

What is the IUD?

The IUD (Intra-uterine device) is a device inserted into the vagina to prevent fertilization of the egg or implantation of the fertilized egg. The IUD is spiral shaped and cuts the egg or zygote up as it passes to the uterus. Some possible side effects may include: perforation of the uterus, temporary or permanent sterility, tubal pregnancy, future miscarriages, pelvic inflammatory disease, and even death.

What is Norplant?

Norplant is a series of capsules which are implanted under the skin. It is designed to be effective for up to five years. Norplant acts as a contraceptive and an abortifacient. Studies show that it may cause abortions 50-60% of the time. Norplant is difficult to remove. Some possible side effects of Norplant may include: weight gain, nausea, yeast
infections, and acne. The most serious side effects include heart attacks, strokes, and nerve damage.

What is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is an injection received every three months. It acts as a contraceptive and an abortifacient. It has the same three mechanisms that the Pill does, two are contraceptive and one is abortion-causing. Depo-Prevara causes abortions 46% of the time. Some possible side effects from Dep-Prevara include: increased risk of breast cancer, mood swings, and blood pressure problems.

What is the “Pull-out” method?

The pull-out method is an ineffective method of birth control in which the male pulls his penis out of the vagina prior to ejaculation. The reason this method is not effective is because the penis produces a lubricant prior to ejaculation that has millions of sperm in it, and it only takes one to fertilize an egg.

The Pill or other forms of birth control, though highly effective, may not stop you from getting pregnant, nor can they prevent you from getting a sexually transmitted disease. Even the condom only offers minimal risk reduction for getting an STD. Contraceptive failure rates, meaning a viable pregnancy has occurred, are consistently 10% for teenagers under the age of 18. 650,000 teens become pregnant each year in the United States and Canada, half of which end in abortion. The only 100% effective way to avoid pregnancy and STDs is by practicing abstinence until marriage. Only a mutually monogamous relationship can prevent STDs. Once you are married and wish to hold off on becoming a parent, then you can discuss with your doctor which birth control method is right for you. Pure Victory Ministries does not agree with using abortifacient birth control methods and recommends using barrier methods and/ or natural family planning.
