I was in a car accident when I was 17 in which I busted 2 teeth. A root canal was performed on both. I lost one to infection a few years later and got what’s called a Maryland Bridge. About ten years later, the other tooth decided it wasn’t going to hold the bridge any longer so I opted for a titanium dental implant- one metal rod to support a crown with 2 fake teeth. The crown is porcelain plated gold! I have an expensive mouth!
As I sat in the dentist’s chair, numbed with Novocain, the dentist began the work of pulling the tooth with the 19 year old root canal. He made a funny noise and said, “Man is that rotted! Wanna see it?” I sure did! That type of stuff is pretty cool! But, oh my! He wasn’t lying! That tooth was rotted. Brown, soft, porous. Rotted! Everything a tooth shouldn’t be.
Later, I did a little research on the dangers of root canals long term, and discovered leaving a dead body part in your body can be toxic! Go figure.
I got to thinking about that today and realized we are much like my teeth. Before the accident, I had perfect teeth! Straight, undamaged, beautiful teeth. Oh they were just how God intended for them to be. Much like God intended for Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They walked with God and in the fullness of His glory.
Then the accident happened. I was not obedient in the law of wearing a seat belt and face-planted the dashboard. One tooth shot out of my mouth. It became separated from my body. (I didn’t know you could stick a tooth back in your mouth! But apparently you can!) I needed to have these damaged teeth fixed. But it was not to be. The teeth died. And root canals were done. The accident was much like the fall of man- disobedience separated man from God and killed their spirit. Eventually, man begged for a way to fix it. “Give us laws!” So God gave them the law, just like they asked. And they sacrificed animals to cover their sins.
But in the end, I needed the rotten tooth pulled just like we need our sins eradicated, not simply covered. Leaving your spirit man dead in your body is toxic to your soul. I left that dead tooth in my body for far longer than any person should- 19 years! I should have opted for the titanium implant and gold crown at the onset, especially since it would have still been covered by the auto insurance. Leaving it in for so long was costly. Sin is also costly, and deadly. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 NLJV
Don’t let the rottenness of sin keep you from the blessings of God when He has a crown waiting for you! Why not take the time, right now, and exchange that dead, infectious, rotten spirit for a crown? A crown worth far more than gold. A crown of His righteousness, His glory, His holiness!
Left in our toxic sin, we become infected with evil to the point of eternal damnation. But, when we believe on Him Who saved us, we become purified and given eternal life with our Creator. Receive His free gift of salvation as redemption for your sin. I promise you, it will be the best decision you will ever make!
